In the Cherkasy region, a former bank employee was caught embezzling over 1 million hryvnias from the account of the grandmother of a fallen soldier.

This was reported by the National Police of Ukraine.

According to the investigation, while serving as the chief economist of a bank branch, the woman misled a 78-year-old client and convinced her to open an additional account. Funds were transferred to this account in connection with the death of the client’s grandson in the combat zone in the Kharkiv region.

Subsequently, the suspect gained access to the new account and systematically withdrew cash via ATMs in the city, embezzling the victim’s funds.

During the investigation, police conducted searches at the suspect’s residence and former workplace. The woman was notified of her status as a suspect under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, including grand theft, unauthorized interference with information systems, laundering of proceeds of crime, and misappropriation of official documents.

The court ordered her to be held in custody as a preventive measure. The suspect faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.

Earlier, the Podil District Prosecutor’s Office in Kyiv issued a notice of suspicion in absentia against the director and beneficiary of a private company that was supposed to supply a batch of drones to a Ukrainian company to fulfill a government contract. The entrepreneurs embezzled the funds and fled abroad.

In the Zhytomyr region, police determined that the head of a construction contractor had submitted false information about the work performed. This allowed him to illegally appropriate over 9 million hryvnias in budget funds.
