Illegal timber exports to Ireland were stopped at Yagodyn
Customs officers in Volyn at the “Yagodin” checkpoint discovered nearly 18 cubic meters of pine stakes that were being attempted to be exported to Ireland with documents that did not match the actual cargo. The estimated value of the timber is 250,000 hryvnias. The goods were temporarily seized, and a report on a violation of customs regulations was filed against the company’s director.
During a customs inspection at the “Yagodin” checkpoint, officials from the Volyn Customs Office noticed a shipment of wood bound for export. According to the shipping documents, nearly 18 cubic meters of pine logs were supposed to have been debarked in the Chernihiv region. Their final destination was Ireland.
However, during the inspection, customs officials consulted an expert to determine whether the actual cargo matched the information stated in the documents. The inspection revealed discrepancies between the actual timber and the raw material described in the certificate of origin. In other words, the documents did not provide reliable confirmation of the origin of the timber that was being attempted to be exported from Ukraine.
The goods were seized
Due to the violations discovered, the timber, with an estimated value of 250,000 UAH, was temporarily seized. It is currently being held at the customs warehouse. Customs officials drew up a report on the violation of customs regulations against the company’s director under Part 1 of Article 483 of the Customs Code of Ukraine.
This article provides for a fine, and, depending on the court’s decision, may also result in the confiscation of the goods. At the same time, the final decision regarding liability and the future disposition of the seized timber must be made in accordance with the procedure established by law.
The offender proposed a settlement agreement
After the report was drawn up, the company’s director expressed a desire to terminate the proceedings by entering into a settlement agreement. This mechanism is provided for under customs law. It allows the violator to voluntarily agree to fulfill certain conditions in order to have the case closed.
In this case, this involves paying an amount into the state budget equal to the fine specified in the relevant article. This must be done within one month. If the decision to enter into a settlement agreement is approved and its terms are fulfilled on time, the proceedings will be terminated. Afterward, the goods can be cleared in accordance with the declared customs procedure.
The Volyn Customs Office has already concluded over a hundred such agreements
Customs officials also reported that this case is not an isolated one. Since the beginning of 2026, the Volyn Customs Office has concluded more than 100 settlement agreements with violators of customs regulations. Under these agreements, the violators voluntarily and promptly transferred more than 5 million UAH to the state budget.
Customs officials emphasize that the settlement mechanism allows for the resolution of individual cases without lengthy proceedings, provided the violator agrees to comply with the conditions stipulated by law. In the case of the timber from “Yagodyn,” the issue of a settlement agreement and subsequent customs clearance of the goods will be resolved in accordance with established procedures. This was reported by the Volyn Customs Office.
Earlier, a female officer of the General Staff was detained for accepting a bribe of $14,000.
