In Khmelnytskyi Oblast, police officers will stand trial for concealing evidence in the case of a teenager's death

Two inspectors from the Shepetivka District Police Department have been notified that they are suspected of intentionally concealing the circumstances of a fatal accident in which a 17-year-old cyclist was killed. The law enforcement officers, who were the first to arrive at the scene on January 18, 2026, failed to secure the physical evidence and allowed the position of the vehicle to be altered.

This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.

The investigation established that the suspects intentionally turned off their body cameras to conceal details of their initial actions and the condition of the person responsible for the accident. In addition, the officers did not test the driver for intoxication immediately after the incident, which led to the loss of important evidence of the crime. The issue of removing the law enforcement officers from their posts and imposing preventive measures on them under the article on concealing a particularly serious crime is currently being decided.

The driver of the vehicle has already been sentenced to nine years in prison, as a blood test later revealed a blood alcohol level of 1.73. Despite the police officers’ attempts to alter the scene of the accident, the investigation succeeded in proving the driver’s guilt in court. Now, the Russian officials themselves will face legal consequences, as their inaction and manipulation of evidence hindered the establishment of the truth in the case.
