A woman and her 11-year-old granddaughter drowned in a body of water in the Khmelnytskyi region

A tragic incident occurred while people were relaxing near a body of water in the Shepetivka District of Khmelnytskyi Oblast. In the village of Yampil, two people—an elderly woman and her 11-year-old granddaughter—died while swimming in a local pond. The circumstances of the incident are currently being investigated.

A report of the emergency was received by the Rescue Service the previous day, June 10, at 7:59 p.m. Rescue workers and a police investigative team immediately responded to the scene of the tragedy. When the State Emergency Service units arrived at the pond, the first victim had already been found. Local residents who happened to be nearby managed to pull the body of the woman, born in 1962, out of the water and onto the shore on their own before the specialists arrived.

The search for the child required the use of special equipment. Using an inflatable boat, emergency responders thoroughly searched the bottom and waters of the village pond. Shortly thereafter, the body of a girl born in 2014 was located at depth and brought to the surface.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent for forensic examination to determine the exact cause of death. Law enforcement agencies are currently investigating all the details, causes, and circumstances that led to the simultaneous deaths of the child and her grandmother during their evening outing, according to the State Emergency Service of Khmelnytskyi Oblast.

As a reminder, in May, five people drowned in Ukraine in just a single day.
