In the Kyiv region, a woman who arranged sham marriages for money has been charged

Police in the Kyiv region have arrested a Kyiv resident who was “legalizing” foreigners in Ukraine through sham marriages. She faces up to nine years in prison for her actions.

This was reported by the Kyiv Region Police.

It was established that the 43-year-old woman, for the purpose of personal gain, sought out foreigners who wished to marry Ukrainian women. She then found women in difficult financial circumstances in Kyiv and the Kyiv region to enter into sham marriages.

After such “marriages,” the foreigners received temporary residence permits, i.e., the right to officially stay in Ukraine. For the “services” provided, the suspect received between three and five thousand dollars.

Operational support was provided by officers of the Migration Police Department. During searches, law enforcement officers discovered and seized evidence of illegal activity.

Investigators, under the procedural guidance of the Bucha District Prosecutor’s Office, notified the woman of her status as a suspect in the illegal organization and smuggling of persons across the state border of Ukraine, as well as directing such actions and aiding in their commission for personal gain (Part 3 of Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
