Operations at three border checkpoints on the border between Ukraine and Moldova will be temporarily adjusted
At the border between Ukraine and Moldova, the operations of three border crossing points will be temporarily adjusted. Starting September 12, Moldovan border guards and customs officers working on Ukrainian territory will return to Moldova due to the security situation. The checkpoints themselves will continue to operate, and the movement of people and vehicles will not be halted.
Moldova is temporarily changing the operating procedures of its control authorities at three border crossing points on the border with Ukraine. This is due to Russian airstrikes on Ukrainian infrastructure, particularly in areas near the Moldovan border. The changes will take effect on September 12 at 8:00 a.m. and will remain in place for 90 days. Moldovan authorities emphasize that the decision is temporary and preventive in nature. It concerns three border crossing points where joint Moldovan-Ukrainian control is currently in effect:
- Giurgiulești–Reni;
- Brichen – Rossoshany;
- Kryva – Mamaliga.
Currently, representatives of the Moldovan Border Police and Customs Service are working on the Ukrainian side of these checkpoints. They conduct the necessary inspections together with Ukrainian authorities. Once the operating procedures change, the Moldovan officers will leave Ukrainian territory and return to Moldova. Going forward, they will conduct inspections from the Moldovan side of the border.
The Moldovan Border Police explained that this decision is specifically related to the safety of their personnel. Recently, Russian troops have repeatedly struck Ukrainian infrastructure, particularly in areas located near the border with Moldova. At the same time, Moldovan officials specifically emphasized that the border crossing points themselves will remain operational. “This measure does not affect the functionality of the border crossing points or the cross-border movement of people and vehicles,” the agency noted.
In other words, for people planning to cross the border through these checkpoints, the mere fact that Moldovan border control services have relocated does not mean the checkpoints are closed. Border crossings and vehicle traffic are expected to continue. The Moldovan Border Police also emphasized that the decision was made due to changes in the security situation near the Moldovan-Ukrainian border. “The organization of border control activities at the three border crossing points will be temporarily adjusted,” the agency reported.
Thus, for the specified 90 days, Moldovan authorities will operate from a location that is safer for their personnel. After this period ends, the operating procedures may be revised depending on the security situation. It is important to note that this specifically concerns the organization of border control operations and does not involve restrictions on travel between Ukraine and Moldova. Therefore, passengers and drivers were not notified of the closure of the Giurgiulești–Reni, Briceni–Rossoșani, or Kryva–Mamaliga border crossings.
Moldova’s decision is linked to the overall situation in Ukraine, where Russian attacks pose risks not only to populated areas and infrastructure directly, but also to territories near the border with neighboring countries. This was reported by the Border Police of the Republic of Moldova.
In Moldova, both Ukraine and Moldova reacted with caution to a statement by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s plane may have been threatened by a drone during his flight to Oslo.
