In the Lviv region, a man set off a grenade during a confrontation

In Sheptytskyi, Lviv Oblast, a 36-year-old soldier on leave set off a grenade during a confrontation with passersby. Four people—three women and one man—suffered shrapnel wounds as a result of the explosion. Police located the suspect and took him into custody.

 

A grenade exploded in Sheptytskyi, Lviv Oblast, injuring four people. A report of the explosion on Taras Shevchenko Avenue was received via the “102” emergency hotline on September 26. Investigators and other officers from the Sheptytskyi District Police Department arrived at the scene. Bomb disposal experts and other specialists from the Lviv Regional Police were also on the scene.

According to law enforcement officials, four local residents sustained shrapnel wounds as a result of the explosion. Among the injured were three women aged 17, 18, and 56, as well as a 26-year-old man. All of the injured were taken to the hospital, where medical personnel provided them with the necessary care.

What Happened Before the Explosion

Police determined that a 36-year-old resident of the Sheptytskyi District detonated the grenade during a confrontation with passersby. According to law enforcement officials, the man is a member of the military and was on leave at the time of the incident. After identifying him, police located him and took him into custody.

Police reported that they have opened a criminal case regarding the incident under Part 4 of Article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—hooliganism. This article provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of three to seven years. The court is expected to determine a pretrial measure for the detainee shortly. Investigators are currently establishing all the circumstances of the conflict and the explosion. The court will provide the final legal assessment of the man’s actions.
