Ukraine Received $51.5 Million from Japan for Medical Development

Ukraine has received a $51.5 million tranche from the Japanese government to support and develop the healthcare system as part of the World Bank’s THRIVE (“Health Transformation”) project. The funds have already been transferred to the state budget.

Payments are contingent upon meeting specific performance targets, including improving the effectiveness of stroke treatment in hospitals through the active use of thrombolysis. 

The initiative also aims to improve the prioritization of medical services, optimize the network of healthcare providers, and strengthen the capacity of Ukraine’s National Health Service. The total budget for the THRIVE program is $1.2 billion, of which Ukraine has already received $449 million. The project is scheduled to run until spring 2028, and its implementation is overseen by the Ministry of Health.

The Japanese Embassy in Ukraine has provided the Ukrainian Armed Forces with an undisclosed number of Toyota HMV off-road vehicles.

Kyiv received equipment from its Japanese partners to ensure the uninterrupted operation of artesian pumping stations that supply water to approximately 60,000 residents of the capital.
