In the Lviv region, a woman on dialysis gave birth to a baby girl
At the Mother and Child Clinic of the Lviv National Medical University University Hospital, a woman who has been undergoing dialysis for a year gave birth to a baby girl. The baby was born at 35 weeks of gestation via cesarean section and weighed 2,100 grams.
The woman has been living with kidney disease for 15 years. Doctors note that pregnancy in patients on dialysis is extremely complicated, and this is only the second such case in their practice over the past 40 years.
Iryna has been living with kidney disease for 15 years and has been on hemodialysis for the past year. Despite her complicated health condition, she became pregnant. This pregnancy came as a big surprise to the family, but at the same time, it was very much wanted. Last year, she had to terminate her pregnancy for medical reasons due to her health condition. This time, the doctors decided to monitor the pregnancy and do everything possible to ensure it results in the birth of a child.
According to Yuriy Burak, head of the hospital’s Department of Extragenital Pathology and Pregnancy Pathology, such cases are extremely rare.
“In nearly 40 years of practice, this is only the second such case. It is possible to get pregnant while on dialysis. But carrying a pregnancy to term is less likely, because indicators of kidney failure also affect the baby’s development. And this woman managed to carry her pregnancy to 35 weeks,” the doctor says.
During her pregnancy, the woman underwent hemodialysis twice a week; after being admitted to the hospital, the procedures were increased to three times a week. During an examination, doctors identified a risk of fetal death, so they decided to perform a cesarean section. A baby girl named Teresa was born, weighing approximately 2,100 g.
The baby was initially in the intensive care unit, and on the 10th day, she was transferred to the post-intensive care unit, where she was already with her mother. Tests showed that Teresa’s kidneys showed no pathological changes.
This is according to the hospital.
