A record-breaking heat wave was recorded on one of the Carpathian peaks

A new temperature record was set in the Carpathians. On June 30, the air temperature on Mount Pozhezhivska reached +27.8°C—the highest reading for that day in the entire history of observations.

The Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Center for Hydrometeorology reported a new temperature record in the Carpathians. According to meteorologists, on June 30, 2026, the maximum air temperature on Mount Pozhezhevska reached +27.8°C.

This surpassed the previous record, which had stood since 2022. At that time, meteorologists recorded +24.4°C. Thus, the new reading was 3.4 degrees higher than the previous high. “On June 30, 2026, the maximum air temperature on Mount Pozhezhevska was +27.8°C,” reported the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Center for Hydrometeorology.

Mount Pozhezhevska is one of the peaks of the Ukrainian Carpathians. It is located in the Chornogora Range and rises 1,822 meters above sea level. An avalanche weather station operates on the mountain’s slope at an elevation of about 1,550 meters. It is there that long-term observations of weather and climate in the high mountains have been conducted. Also nearby is a biological research station of the Institute of Carpathian Ecology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, where scientific research on natural ecosystems is carried out.

In recent weeks, meteorologists have been reporting record-breaking temperatures in various regions of Ukraine with increasing frequency. High temperatures are being recorded not only in cities but also in mountainous areas, which are traditionally considered cooler. The new record in Pozhezhivska once again confirms that this summer’s heat wave has even reached the high-altitude areas of the Carpathians. The Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Center for Hydrometeorology reported this on Facebook.

Forecasters are warning of thunderstorms and, in some places, hail in a number of regions on July 1. The inclement weather may disrupt operations at energy, construction, and utility companies, as well as affect traffic.
