In the Rivne region, a train engineer and an accomplice attempted to steal 820 liters of diesel fuel

In the Rivne region, law enforcement officers apprehended two men suspected of attempting to steal 820 liters of diesel fuel from a diesel locomotive. By court order, both suspects were taken into custody with the possibility of bail.

According to the investigation, a 38-year-old resident of the region conspired with a 39-year-old diesel locomotive engineer to steal fuel during the engineer’s shift. Near the railroad tracks in the Dubno district, they were transferring the diesel fuel into containers they had prepared in advance when they were detained by law enforcement officers. The amount of damage caused to Ukrzaliznytsia exceeds 63,000 hryvnias.

On June 25, the man arrived at the railroad tracks in the village of Ozeryany in a Škoda car with a trailer containing barrels, canisters, and hoses. At the same time, the locomotive, driven by the engineer, arrived at the agreed-upon location.

According to investigators, the accomplices broke the seal and siphoned off 820 liters of diesel fuel into 24 pre-prepared containers. They had already managed to load some of the barrels onto the trailer when they were caught by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department. The men’s actions caused losses to Ukrzaliznytsia totaling more than 63,000 UAH.

Both suspects were detained and placed in a temporary detention facility. They were notified of charges under Part 3 of Article 15 and Part 4 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (attempted theft committed under martial law). The penalty for these offenses ranges from five to eight years of imprisonment.

The court imposed a pretrial detention measure on the suspects for a period of 60 days, with the right to post bail. The pretrial investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement officials are identifying other individuals who may be involved in the crime.

This was reported on Monday, June 29, by the Rivne Regional Police press service.
