In the Ternopil region, a police officer was caught accepting a $1,200 bribe to avoid opening a case

In the Ternopil region, an officer from one of the police stations has been notified of charges against him; he is suspected of extorting a bribe in exchange for not initiating criminal proceedings.

This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.

According to the investigation, the police officer fabricated a problem for a local resident who works for the rescue service. He told the man that he had allegedly been illegally cultivating someone else’s land and began threatening him with criminal charges.

Later, the officer went to the fire and rescue station where the man works and demanded $1,200 in exchange for not handing over the materials to investigators and prosecutors and not initiating a case.

The victim contacted law enforcement and handed over the money under the supervision of investigators. Following this, the police officer was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine and suspended from duty.

The court imposed a preventive measure of pretrial detention on him, with an alternative bail of nearly 200,000 hryvnias.

Law enforcement officials are also investigating the possible involvement of other police department officials in the scheme.
