The ashes of OUN leader Andriy Melnyk and his wife have been returned to Ukraine
The remains of Andriy Melnyk, a colonel in the Ukrainian People’s Republic Army and head of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, as well as those of his wife, Sofia, were transferred to Ukraine across the Slovak border on May 21.
According to Iryna Vereshchuk, Deputy Head of the Office of the President, Andriy Melnyk’s reburial will take place on May 24 in Kyiv at the National Military Memorial Cemetery.
The couple’s remains were exhumed on May 19 in Luxembourg, where they had previously been buried.
Andriy Melnyk was a colonel in the army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and led the OUN from 1938 to 1964.
The Cabinet of Ministers approved a decision to reburial in Ukraine the remains of Andriy Melnyk, head of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, and his wife, Sofia Fedak-Melnyk.
The remains of Andriy Melnyk, head of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, and his wife Sofia were exhumed in Luxembourg, after which their remains are being prepared for reburial in Ukraine. The event took place with the participation of Ukrainian representatives and is part of the process of returning historical figures to their homeland.
