The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged Ukrainians not to travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo due to the Ebola outbreak

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine recommends that citizens refrain from traveling to certain regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo due to the Ebola outbreak. The restrictions apply to areas affected by the epidemic where the spread of this dangerous disease has been confirmed.

The relevant recommendation has been published on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website.

“In connection with the World Health Organization’s official confirmation on May 17, 2026, of an Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine recommends that Ukrainian citizens refrain from traveling to the region affected by the epidemic. The virus is spreading rapidly in the provinces of Ituri and South Kivu,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.

Ukrainian citizens already in the DRC are advised to refrain from traveling to the aforementioned provinces, follow the instructions of local authorities, and regularly monitor official announcements from the Ukrainian Embassy.

In case of an emergency, the Ministry advises contacting the hotlines of the Ukrainian Embassy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by phone at +243 82 000 7109 (WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram), email: [email protected], [email protected], or the 24-hour hotline of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine: +38 044 238 15 88, email: [email protected]

In the DRC, thedeath toll from Ebola has risen to 131 – Reuters.

Earlier reports indicated that the 17th Ebola outbreak had been recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which has already claimed the lives of 80 people. This time, the disease was likely caused by the little-studied Bundibugyo ebolavirus strain, rather than the more common Zaire ebolavirus.

Ethiopia has recorded its first outbreak of the Marburg virus, which is clinically similar to Ebola. The pathogen is capable of spreading rapidly, but there are no vaccines against it.
