A scandal broke out at the graduation ceremony in Kopychyntsi over the use of a bilingual song by Monatik
In the town of Kopychyntsi in the Ternopil region, a major scandal erupted over the graduation ceremony at Lyceum No. 2 due to the use of a song containing Russian-language lyrics during a dance with parents.
The Kopychyntsi community’s education department immediately launched an official investigation into the incident.
At the same time, the community leadership swiftly decided to impose a moratorium on the public use of Russian-language cultural content.
In the comments under the post, a large number of users strongly condemned the choice of Dmytro Monatik’s song “To Parents,” which was released back in 2019.
Although the main lyrics of this song are in Ukrainian, the very end of the track features authentic audio recordings of children speaking in Russian.
Many citizens justified their outrage by arguing that broadcasting Russian phrases at a public children’s event during a full-scale war is absolutely unacceptable and immoral.
At the same time, some social media users expressed a different view, noting that it is not the right time to raise the language issue or criticize the event’s organizers.
They argued that today’s students have already “suffered enough from constant anxiety and studying in shelters.” However, official authorities reacted to the incident immediately.
The leadership of the Department of Education confirmed that a special commission had been formed to investigate all the circumstances and details surrounding the choice of musical accompaniment.
“It was a graduation party on June 21, exclusively for the graduates of one school. After all the celebrations and the official part of the program, a dance with parents was scheduled at the end. During this dance, a song by Monatik was played. We understand the community’s outrage. A commission has now been formed to conduct an internal investigation into this incident. The school administration has provided an explanation regarding the choice of the song. “They rehearsed the official part, but not the informal part—the waltz with parents—so they didn’t know there were Russian-language lines at the end of the track,” said Stepan Vasylyshyn.
