A new burial site for victims of the 1943 events has been discovered in Volyn

In the Volyn region, a new burial site, likely linked to the Volyn tragedy of 1943, was discovered during search operations in the former village of Ostrivky.

Excavations are being conducted on the grounds near the foundation of a former school. According to preliminary data, the grave pit measures approximately 2 by 3 meters, and the remains lie at a depth of 10–15 centimeters.

Expedition members have already documented human bones; in particular, according to unofficial information, at least two skulls have been found.

Experts are currently unable to definitively determine whether this is an individual burial or a mass grave. Exhumation and identification efforts are ongoing.

The search expedition has been working at the site since last week. The investigation is part of broader efforts to study historical events and honor the memory of the victims.

The exhumation of victims of the Volhynia tragedy in Ukraine began in April 2025. Work started in the Ternopil region.

Ukraine has granted Poland permission to search for and exhume the victims of the Volhynia tragedy. In turn, Poland will support Ukraine’s aspirations to join the EU.
