The Ministry of Economy is preparing to artificially replenish the Danube lakes due to low water levels
The Ministry of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture, together with local authorities, has begun preparatory measures to replenish the Danube lakes in the Odesa region. This is due to insufficient natural water inflow during the spring flood season and the threat of low water levels. The decision is intended to help stabilize the water balance in the region.
This was reported by the ministry’s press service following a meeting with relevant agencies and the Odesa Regional State Administration.
Due to the risks of increased water mineralization and the threat to irrigation, the primary task has been identified as filling the lakes before the peak summer period. In particular, plans are in place to use pumping stations to artificially fill Lake Katlabukh in the near future. Lake Kytay requires systematic water exchange over several years to reduce salinity levels.
"We must supply the reservoirs with water as quickly as possible, rather than reacting to a crisis in the middle of the season," the publication quotes Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture Iryna Ovcharenko as saying.
The State Fisheries Agency proposed the construction of an autonomous 75 kW solar-powered pumping station for Lake Katlabukh, equipped with a 300 kWh energy storage system.
Following the meeting, it was decided to consolidate funding, prepare estimates of water needs, and develop energy-efficient solutions for the operation of the pumping stations. The State Fisheries Agency, the State Water Agency, the Odesa Regional Military Administration, district administrations, and local communities are involved in the effort.
