The Netherlands has supplied Ukraine with €5 billion worth of weapons over the past year

Over the past year, the Netherlands has supplied Ukraine with weapons and military equipment worth more than 5 billion euros. This significant increase in aid was directly linked to the reduction in military support for Kyiv from the United States. For the current year 2026, the Dutch Ministry of Defense has already set aside an additional 3 billion euros in the budget for Ukraine’s military needs.

This is reported in an official report from the Dutch Ministry of Defense.

In addition to funding and supplying air defense systems and combat vehicles, Amsterdam continues to provide training for Ukrainian military personnel. At the same time, the current geopolitical situation is forcing the country to rapidly strengthen its own military capabilities to deter potential adversaries.

As part of the large-scale development of its own armed forces, the Netherlands has achieved the following results:

  • Defense budget: In 2025, it reached approximately €26 billion (an increase of €5 billion compared to the previous year), allowing the country to comfortably exceed NATO’s target of 2% of GDP.

  • Personnel expansion: Over the past year, the size of the defense sector increased by 5,600 personnel. Currently, the force employs over 80,000 personnel, with a strategic goal of reaching 100,000 by 2030.

  • Procurement and rearmament: In partnership with Germany, contracts have been signed for Leopard 2A8 tanks (deliveries starting in 2027), and in cooperation with Austria and Sweden, a program to acquire C-390 transport aircraft is underway.

  • Technological Leap: In 2025, €390 million was invested in research on artificial intelligence, drones, and space; specifically, four operational reconnaissance satellites have already been launched into orbit.

During a meeting in Kyiv on March 8 with the new Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Rob Jetten, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted the critical need for radar systems.

Earlier, the Netherlands had transferred three Patriot air defense missile launchers to Ukraine.
