Fish Are Dying in Large Numbers in the Zhytomyr Region Due to Sewage Discharges

More than 1,100 fish died in the Kamyanka River in the Zhytomyr region, and the environmental damage exceeds 400,000 hryvnias. According to experts from the Polissya District Department of Environmental Inspection and the Zhytomyr Fish Protection Patrol, the cause of the fish kill was a sharp drop in oxygen levels and significantly elevated levels of ammonium nitrogen, phosphates, chlorides, and sulfates in the water.

Preliminary laboratory test results indicate that the pollution was caused by the discharge of municipal wastewater. Despite the suspension of the main discharge, contaminated water continued to enter the reservoir through an emergency outlet. Environmental officials will forward all case materials to law enforcement agencies.

This is already the third case of mass death of aquatic life in the Zhytomyr community over the past six months. Previously, similar incidents were recorded in the Sokolovsky Pond and the Kroshenka River, where total damages exceeded 2 million hryvnias.
