Poland has stepped up security at six border crossings with Ukraine
Poland has placed six border crossings on the border with Ukraine on high alert. Military personnel have been deployed at the border crossings, and additional security measures have been implemented to ensure a faster evacuation of people in the event of a threat.
Poland has stepped up security measures at six border crossing points on the border with Ukraine. These include checkpoints in the Lublin and Subcarpathian provinces. The Polish government explained that the decision was made following recent Russian drone attacks in western Ukraine. The heightened security measures apply to the border crossing points at Dorohusk, Zosin, Budomierz, Korczowa, Medyka, and Kroscienko.
Polish Army personnel will now be on duty at these facilities. According to Marcin Kiewiński, Poland’s Minister of the Interior and Administration, it took less than a day after the decision was made to train the troops and place the border crossing points on high alert. “Putting the border crossing points on the border with Ukraine on high alert and preparing the military personnel took less than 24 hours after the decision was made,” Kiewiński stated.
He added that the military set up special checkpoints in accordance with recommendations from the Polish Border Guard. As a result, border guards and the army will work together to strengthen security along key transportation routes.
What Has Changed at the Border Crossings
Additional rules governing the presence of people and vehicles have been implemented at six border crossing points. In particular, limits have been placed on the number of people and vehicles that can be present at the border crossing points at any one time. This is intended to help in the event of an emergency. If a threat arises, people and vehicles can be evacuated from the danger zone more quickly.
Areas within the checkpoints have also been designated that can be used as shelters. If additional structures are needed for this purpose at certain facilities, they will be constructed as a matter of urgency. In other words, this does not mean closing the border or suspending operations at the border crossing points. The Polish side is strengthening the security of the border crossing points themselves and preparing them for potential emergencies.
At the same time, the border crossing points remain vital routes for passenger and freight traffic between Ukraine and Poland. Significant transport flows pass through them, so their uninterrupted operation is important not only for the two countries but also for broader European logistics.
Polish military personnel are already deployed at the border
The security measures are not merely symbolic. The Polish Army has already deployed its posts at designated checkpoints. Polish Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that the military has joined efforts to protect border infrastructure. Earlier, Poland also reported on the construction of additional protective structures near certain border crossing points.
In particular, Polish military engineers have been installing protective structures near Dorohusk, Medyce, and Korchova. These include fortified containers and other elements that can be used to protect personnel from debris and blast waves.
These measures are in response to recent incidents in which Russian drones have repeatedly approached the Polish border or been detected near Polish territory. Poland views the protection of border infrastructure as part of a broader security system.
Why Were These Specific Checkpoints Reinforced?
The six border crossing points are located in two Polish provinces that directly border Ukraine. Dorohusk and Zosin are in the Lublin Voivodeship, while Budomierz, Korczowa, Medyka, and Kroscienko are in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship. These crossings are important transportation routes between Ukraine and Poland. Passengers, freight, and humanitarian aid pass through them.
The Polish Ministry of the Interior noted that two years ago, border crossing points on the border with Ukraine were added to the list of critical infrastructure facilities. This provides Polish authorities with additional capabilities to respond to various incidents and threats.
That is why any risks to these facilities are considered separately. In the event of an emergency, it is important not only to protect people but also to prevent the prolonged blockage of key transportation routes.
Poland is monitoring the situation following drone attacks
Security measures are being strengthened amid attacks by Russian drones on western regions of Ukraine. Polish authorities are closely monitoring the situation, as hostilities are taking place near its border. Earlier, the Polish military had already strengthened defenses in border areas due to the drone threat. Poland has also emphasized the need to prepare its border infrastructure for potential incidents.
At the same time, Polish authorities emphasize that the border area itself remains safe. According to Kiewiński, the increased readiness is primarily intended to ensure a rapid response should the situation change. “Despite recent incidents involving Russian drones near the Polish border, this area remains safe,” the Polish minister stated.
Thus, heightened readiness at the six border crossing points does not mean they will be closed. Poland is strengthening its military presence, implementing additional control measures, and preparing shelters so that, in the event of a threat, people can be quickly protected and critical border crossings can continue to operate.
