In the Zhytomyr region, a bridge that is over 60 years old is being renovated
In the Zhytomyr region, reconstruction of certain sections of the H-03 Zhytomyr–Chernivtsi highway is underway. As part of the project, the bridge over the Ibr River is undergoing major repairs. Retaining walls are also being built along this section, and new pavement is being laid. The bridge, built more than 60 years ago, is receiving a comprehensive renovation.
Repairs to the H-03 Highway
The bridge over the Ibr River was built in the early 1960s. Since then, it has never undergone a major overhaul. Due to increased traffic volume and significant wear and tear on the structure, the bridge no longer meets safety requirements.
Currently, individual bridge elements are being dismantled at the site, and preparations are underway to install a new foundation. Specifically, the project calls for the installation of bored concrete piles.
At the same time, road pavement layers are being laid in the reconstruction zones. The work includes installing a drainage layer of crushed stone, laying geogrids to reinforce the pavement layers, full asphalt paving, and installing curbs.
Due to the reconstruction of Highway H-03, the section between the towns of Chudniv and Liubar is closed. A detour has been set up for traffic.
After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, construction and major repair work on highways and engineering structures was suspended. In particular, construction of the overpass on the H-03 Zhytomyr–Chernivtsi highway and its access roads was halted.
At the same time, completing the reconstruction of this road is crucial for ensuring sustainable transportation links between the three regions, as well as with the border with Moldova.
To resume work, the design and cost estimate documentation was revised to account for changes in the cost of materials and services, and new procurements were carried out. Construction work on the project resumed in May 2026.
