The NABU and the SAPO have announced new charges in the case involving alleged corruption in the Supreme Court

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office have announced new charges as part of an investigation into large-scale corruption in the Supreme Court.

This was reported by the NABU.

According to the investigation, three sitting judges and one retired judge may have been involved in receiving a portion of an illegal benefit amounting to $2.7 million for ruling in favor of the owner of the “Finance and Credit” group.

As law enforcement officials note, the court of first instance initially denied the claim filed by former shareholders; however, in 2022, the appellate court overturned that decision and declared the agreement invalid. The case was subsequently referred to the cassation instance, where it was reviewed by the Grand Chamber of the Supreme Court.

Investigators claim that in March–April 2023, the businessman transferred $2.7 million through an intermediary to a lawyer identified as a member of the so-called “back office” of the Supreme Court. According to investigators, the funds were to be passed on to court leadership and individual judges to secure the desired ruling.

On May 15, 2023, law enforcement officials caught the then-chairman of the Supreme Court and the lawyer in the act of receiving the second tranche of the bribe, amounting to $450,000. The case against the former head of the court is currently being heard by the High Anti-Corruption Court.

Subsequently, charges were also filed against a businessman and an intermediary, and the Appeals Chamber of the High Anti-Corruption Court authorized a special pre-trial investigation into the owner of the “Finance and Credit” group. In May 2026, the indictment against the intermediary was already submitted to the court.

The NABU and the SAPO emphasize that the new charges became possible after receiving additional evidence of judges potentially receiving unlawful benefits, and the investigation is ongoing, with the involvement of other individuals being examined.

At the same time, it is emphasized that, in accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a final court judgment.

On May 19, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office announced the expansion of the circle of suspects in a large-scale criminal proceeding regarding alleged corruption in the Supreme Court. According to the investigation, those implicated include current and former Supreme Court judges suspected of receiving improper benefits for ruling in high-profile property disputes.
