The Ministry of Defense is improving the blood transfusion system for wounded soldiers

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense is working to modernize the blood transfusion system at all stages of medical evacuation for military personnel, drawing on the expertise of combat medics and utilizing modern digital solutions.

The ministry emphasizes that Ukraine has created a unique pre-hospital blood transfusion system that has already proven its effectiveness in saving wounded soldiers with massive blood loss directly near the front lines.

At the same time, an analysis of the practice of using donated blood has revealed a number of problems, including inconsistencies between certain military and civilian medical standards, as well as the need to improve the tracking and control of blood component movement.

The Ministry of Defense plans to implement electronic tracking of every unit of blood, expand the digitization of blood monitoring processes, and adapt the regulatory framework to wartime conditions.

According to Dmytro Samofalov, Director of the Ministry of Defense’s Department of Health, the practical experience of military medics from brigades, regiments, and corps will form the basis for new administrative and regulatory decisions.

The ministry emphasized that the development of transfusion care remains one of the key areas of military medicine, as timely blood transfusions significantly increase the chances of survival for the wounded.
