The sky is in store for a special spectacle: July 29 will mark the Deer Full Moon
On July 29, 2026, at 5:35 p.m., the July full moon—known as the “Stag Moon”—will occur. The best time to view it is in the evening after sunset, from a location away from bright city lights.
The name of this phenomenon is linked to the natural cycle of deer—it is in July that males actively grow new antlers. From an astronomical standpoint, the “Deer Moon” is a regular full moon phase, when the side of the Moon illuminated by the Sun is fully facing Earth.
In some years, the July full moon may coincide with a supermoon. In such cases, the Moon appears larger and brighter to observers than usual.
When Will the “Deer Full Moon” Occur in 2026?
According to the lunar phase calendar for Kyiv, the July full moon will occur on Wednesday, July 29, at 5:35 p.m. This is the standard astronomical moment of the full moon, when the Moon is directly opposite the Sun relative to Earth. For residents of Ukraine, this is one of the most noticeable lunar phases in midsummer, when the evenings are already long and, weather permitting, the sky offers good conditions for observation.
Why Is the Full Moon Called the “Deer Moon”?
The name comes from the legends and beliefs of the indigenous peoples of North America—the Algonquin tribes. They long ago noticed that in July, young male deer begin to grow new antlers rapidly.

The July full moon has more than one name. In various traditions, it is also known as:
Thunder Moon — the name refers to the frequent and powerful thunderstorms in July;
Hay Moon — in our ancestors’ agricultural calendar, the seventh month of the year marked the height of hay harvesting for the coming winter;
Berry Moon — the full moon in July coincided with the period when wild forest berries—strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries—ripened en masse.
These names reflect our ancestors’ seasonal observations of the weather, hay harvesting, and the natural cycle of summer.
When and How Best to View the Full Moon
The best time to view the “Deer Moon” is on the evening of July 29 and the following nights, when the sky darkens and the Moon is already clearly visible above the horizon. For Kyiv residents and visitors to the capital, sunset on this day will be at 8:46 p.m. So it is right after that that the full moon will be most clearly visible.
To observe this impressive astronomical phenomenon without any obstructions, choose a spot away from the city (streetlights will make it difficult to see the full moon), in an open area, and, if possible, make sure the sky is clear of clouds.
Note that a telescope or other optical devices won’t be necessary for those who enjoy gazing at the starry sky and the Moon: the full Moon will be visible to the naked eye.
At the same time, astronomers remind us that a full moon isn’t always the best time to observe details on the Moon’s surface. Due to the intense brightness, the terrain is less visible than during phases when shadows are present on the Moon’s disk.
However, if people simply want to admire the Moon and take photos of it, the “Deer Full Moon” won’t get in the way.
