The Odessa Zoo is now without a director
Igor Belyakov has stepped down as director of the Odessa Zoo following the expiration of his contract. He had led the institution for the past 13 years.
He announced this on his official Facebook page.
Belyakov, who headed the institution for many years, noted that during his tenure, the zoo underwent a significant transformation and improved, a fact acknowledged by the city’s residents themselves. At the same time, he emphasized that the institution still faces many unresolved issues that require the attention of his successors.
The former zoo director stressed the need for the zoo’s further development and warned against outside interference that could harm the institution.
“The zoo must continue to develop. We must also not allow various opportunists to destroy the Odessa Zoo,” Bilyakov wrote.
He assured that despite the termination of his powers as director, he will continue to help the zoo, to which he has dedicated his entire life.
Earlier in Odessa, a red-listed snake slithered into a residential area and bit the director of the Odessa Zoo, who was trying to catch it.
Hundreds of birds affected by an oil spill were brought to the Odessa Zoo.
