A well-known Ukrainian announcer has died

At the age of 83, the distinguished Ukrainian announcer Oleksandr Safonov has passed away; for many years, his voice was considered the gold standard of Ukrainian television. 

The legendary host’s heart stopped after a long and serious illness, which he bravely battled during the final years of his life. 

The tragic news was reported on Facebook by renowned Ukrainian journalist Mykola Kanishevsky.

According to him, Safonov died on May 16, 2026. The announcer was buried the following day, May 17, in the village of Potash in the Uman district of the Cherkasy region. 

The farewell to the master of Ukrainian broadcasting took place in the presence of his closest relatives, friends, and colleagues.

The final period of the distinguished journalist’s life was marked by severe physical challenges and a struggle for survival. The cause of death was cancer. 

Additionally, more than 16 years ago, the national television legend suffered a stroke and was bedridden, according to journalist and historian Mykhailo Masliy.

Colleagues remember Oleksandr Safonov as an incredibly cheerful person who remained optimistic until his final days. His contribution to the development of broadcasting culture and the formation of Ukrainian television remains invaluable for many generations. 

Even while in serious condition due to his illness, he never lost his love for life and his profession.

Journalist Mykhailo Masliy shared poignant memories of the legendary host’s final years and difficult diagnoses. He emphasized that Safonov possessed a unique talent that has been forever etched into media history.

“Always cheerful and smiling, the iconic announcer with the quintessential Ukrainian voice, Oleksandr Safonov, was confined to a bed and a wheelchair for over 16 years after suffering a stroke in 2010. This year, he was diagnosed with cancer, which progressed rapidly. On November 28, this natural talent would have turned 83..." Masliy noted.
