EU Ambassador Maternova Described How She Is Coping with Russia's Attacks on Kyiv

Katarina Mathernova, the European Union’s ambassador to Ukraine, said that due to the constant Russian attacks on Kyiv, she no longer sleeps in her bed. The diplomat noted that she falls asleep on a mattress in the bathroom of her hotel room, as she considers that spot the safest.

According to the ambassador, an air raid siren sounded last night after 2:00 a.m., after which she moved from the bathroom to the bomb shelter.

“Last night, shortly after 2:00 a.m., the sirens wailed again, and I went from the bathroom to the bomb shelter. Then Kyiv began to shake. Russia launched another large-scale attack, using ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as a large number of jet-powered drones. Explosions rang out throughout the city,” the ambassador said.

Maternova admitted that amid the regular shelling, she feels exhausted and afraid.

Despite what she has been through, the diplomat emphasized that she does not regret her decision to work in Ukraine.

“But I’m not complaining. Kyiv is my mission. And knowing everything I know today, I still wouldn’t have chosen any other diplomatic posting. I love this city and admire this country. But the intensity of these attacks is becoming unbearable. People are exhausted. Cities are exhausted. The entire country is living under constant stress,” she emphasized.

According to Maternova, Ukrainians don’t need to be reminded of the need to be resilient, because they demonstrate it every day.

“Ukraine doesn’t need to be reminded that it must be resilient.”

The EU ambassador stressed that what Ukrainians need most right now is the right to a normal night’s sleep and rest.

“Ukrainians prove this every day. They need to be able to sleep,” she concluded.

Maternová wrote about this on Facebook.

Earlier, Katarina Maternová, the European Union Ambassador to Ukraine, shared an emotional post following yet another massive Russian attack, which she had to endure while taking shelter. She noted that she spent most of it in a shelter, where she is still feeling the effects of the stress she experienced.
