Fire at the Central Zolotoyarivka Mine Threatens the Region with an Environmental Disaster

Fire at the Central Zolotoyarivka Mine Threatens the Region with an Environmental Disaster

At the Chervonohrad Central Coal Preparation Plant (CCPP), coal residues have been burning continuously, which, according to warnings from labor unions, could lead to a serious environmental and man-made crisis in the region. The situation is already affecting not only the plant’s operations but also posing potential risks to the health of local residents and the stable operation of the mines. The union states that delaying a response will only exacerbate the consequences.

The situation surrounding the Chervonohrad Central Coal Preparation Plant is becoming increasingly alarming, as the prolonged shutdown of the facility and the lack of proper oversight, according to mining industry representatives, have led to dangerous processes within the production facilities. Mykhailo Volynets, chairman of the Independent Trade Union of Miners of Ukraine and a member of parliament, states that the accumulation and prolonged storage of coal residues in the bunkers have triggered an active fire, which is gradually destroying equipment and creating the risk of a major accident.

According to him, the situation is complicated by the fact that access for emergency services to the plant’s premises, he claims, remains limited, and previous attempts to contain the dangerous processes have not received adequate support. This, in Volynets’ view, effectively allows conditions to develop that could make resuming the plant’s operations extremely difficult or even impossible in the future. “They’ll destroy the region’s only coal-processing plant and ruin the region’s environment… And who will be held accountable for people’s health?” Volynets emphasizes, commenting on the situation surrounding the plant.

He draws particular attention to the environmental aspect of the problem, since, according to him, burning coal releases toxic substances into the atmosphere that can pollute the air, soil, and water bodies, as well as affect agriculture and local ecosystems. “Without exaggeration, this is a local environmental and socio-economic disaster for the entire region,” he stated, underscoring the scale of the potential consequences.

The union also warns that further delays in resolving the situation could complicate preparations for the heating season, as the plant plays a vital role in the operation of state-owned mines and in ensuring the fuel supply chain. If the situation worsens, the consequences could extend far beyond a single enterprise and affect the region’s economic and social stability. This was stated by Mykhailo Volynets, chairman of the Independent Trade Union of Miners of Ukraine and a member of parliament.

In the Chernobyl zone, firefighters have extinguished one of the largest fires in recent days. The fire covered an area of 130 hectares but has now been completely extinguished.
