Law enforcement officers detained a 34-year-old resident of Burshtyn who is suspected of stealing a large sum of money from the home of residents in the village of Bratyshiv, Tlumach community.
According to the investigation, the man stole 1.3 million hryvnias from his former teacher. He has been formally notified of the charges against him, and if convicted, he could face up to 12 years in prison.
The suspect arrived in the village and saw his former teacher and her husband heading to the bus stop. After waiting for the couple to leave, the man climbed over the fence, pried open a metal-plastic window, and broke into the house.
“Inside the home, he found where the owners kept their savings and stole $26,500, 1,750 euros, 32,000 hryvnias, as well as gold jewelry. The total amount of damages amounts to nearly 1.3 million hryvnias,” police reported.
Before leaving, the thief attempted to cover his tracks. Upon returning home, the homeowners did not immediately realize they had been victims of a burglary. However, the woman soon noticed that the money and gold jewelry were missing and contacted the police.
The suspect was detained, and part of the stolen money and gold was seized from his residence. The man from the Carpathian region is charged under Part 5 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (theft committed on an especially large scale). The penalty under this article provides for 7 to 12 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property. The suspect was taken into custody with the possibility of posting bail.
