The private defense industry has become the leading manufacturer of artillery shells in Ukraine
Private defense companies have become a key force in supplying Ukraine with artillery ammunition. Ukrainian businesses were able to ramp up production—which had virtually nonexistent prior to the start of the full-scale war—practically from scratch.
Vladislav Belbas, CEO of Ukrainian Armored Vehicles and a member of the NAUDI Presidium, noted that even large budgets, well-known international defense companies, and political support do not guarantee the rapid launch of stable mass production.
According to him, after decades of reducing their defense capabilities, Western countries had to urgently resume ammunition production. At the same time, excessive haste without proper technological verification can lead to problems with quality and production stability.
Ukrainian private companies, despite constant shelling, power shortages, and staffing issues, have managed to organize the production of artillery ammunition.
NAUDI emphasizes that currently, it is the private sector of the defense industry that provides a significant portion of Ukraine’s artillery ammunition supply, whereas government programs require substantial resources and time to launch production.
