The Council of the EU is preparing to launch the first phase of negotiations on Ukraine's membership
Cyprus’s presidency of the Council of the European Union has officially begun preparations for the opening of the first cluster of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.
This step is intended to significantly bring both countries closer to full European integration, which Kyiv hopes to achieve by 2027.
The Cypriot Presidency emphasized that the current stage is a historic moment for both candidate countries.
The organizers of the process are confident that the start of work on this set of issues will demonstrate the European community’s strong stance.
“This marks an important milestone on their path to European integration and sends a strong message of EU unity and determination,” the official statement reads.
Additional consultations are scheduled to take place in the EU Council in the near future. They are necessary for the final coordination of all technical and legal procedures before the launch of the first cluster.
Cyprus’s representatives pledge to ensure a fair and consistent assessment of the candidates’ readiness.
“The Cyprus Presidency, guided by a merit-based approach, is fulfilling its commitment to enlargement, which is a strategic priority and one of the most transformative policies of the European Union,” the statement noted.
