A radiation signal detected in a banknote stopped a Ukrainian woman at the border with Poland
A Ukrainian woman was denied entry at the Polish border after radiometric sensors detected elevated radiation levels. The source of the signal turned out to be a $100 bill, which, according to tests, exceeded background radiation levels by a factor of 1,000. The woman was sent back to Ukraine along with the confiscated money. This was reported by RMF24.pl.
The incident occurred at the “Medika” border crossing, where border guards detected a trigger from the radiometric sensors during a routine inspection. The signal indicated the possible presence of a radioactive source among the belongings of a 54-year-old Ukrainian citizen crossing the border.
After an additional inspection, it turned out that the source of radiation was one of the $100 bills. According to measurements, the level exceeded the natural background radiation by approximately 1,905 times, which immediately drew the attention of the inspection services.
Experts determined that the bill contained an isotope that can be used in the medical field. The hazardous bill was seized and placed in a special protective container, after which they consulted with the National Agency for Atomic Energy to clarify its origin and risks.
According to border guards, the woman was carrying about $10,000 and explained that the funds were intended for the purchase of a car. Despite this, due to the potential danger, she was denied entry into Poland and sent back to Ukraine along with the seized bill.
The Polish Border Guard notes that this is not the first time such incidents have occurred. Previously, there were incidents involving other travelers where radiometric systems also detected traces of elevated radiation on household items or money.
According to them, border controls are conducted continuously: stationary radiometric systems operate at checkpoints, and mobile teams conduct additional checks on suspicious cases. All such alerts are subsequently forwarded to relevant agencies for expert evaluation.
