Following the scandal, Ukrzaliznytsia clarified whether passengers on the lower berths should allow others to use the table
An incident occurred on the Chop–Kyiv train between two female passengers over the rules for using seats in the compartment. Two women returning from a symposium in Prague, who were sitting on the upper berths, were unable to reach an agreement with the young women below regarding the possibility of sitting down for breakfast. According to the explanation provided by Ukrainian Railways, the young women were within their rights.
News of the scandal broke on Threads.
The neighbors on the lower berths refused the women above them their request to use the table, citing travel regulations and insisting that luggage be kept exclusively on their own upper berths. Due to the young women’s firm stance, the passengers above were forced to eat breakfast and spend several hours in the train car’s aisle. Ukrzaliznytsia, commenting on the situation, sided with the occupants of the lower berths, emphasizing that these berths are reserved for those who have officially paid for them.
The carrier emphasized that the difference in comfort is a conscious choice made by passengers when planning their trip, and access to the lower berths is guaranteed only by the corresponding ticket. According to current regulations, a passenger in a lower berth has priority rights to use their berth and luggage rack throughout the entire trip.
Ukrzaliznytsia has launched online sales of discounted student tickets.
