Memorial Day of Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Alexandria

On June 9, the Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Alexandria, who lived in the 4th–5th centuries. Born into a distinguished Christian family, he received a brilliant education and dedicated himself to serving the Church from a young age. In 412, Cyril was elected to the patriarchal throne in Alexandria, which he wisely led for 32 years.
Saint Cyril went down in history as one of the most outstanding Church Fathers and theologians, having written numerous works in defense of Christian dogma. He played a decisive role in the struggle against the heresies of his time and presided over the Third Ecumenical Council in Ephesus in 431, where the dogma of the Divine Motherhood of the Virgin Mary was finally affirmed. For his zealous defense of the purity of the faith and his great spiritual legacy, he was canonized as a saint.
Prayers of the Day
O Holy Father Cyril, glorious defender of the Orthodox faith and teacher of wisdom! We turn to you with sincere prayer and implore: pray to God for us, sinners. Look upon our sorrows, deliver us from visible and invisible enemies, protect us from all danger, heresies, and illnesses. Strengthen us in the true faith, grant us strength of spirit, purity of thought, and wisdom in times of trial.
Amen
Folk Beliefs and Omens
In the folk calendar, this day is called “Kirill’s Day.” Our ancestors believed that from this date on, summer fully comes into its own, and they paid attention to the following omens:
- If the linden trees are in full bloom on Kirill’s Day, the summer season will be very hot and dry.
- If many berries have ripened on the strawberry bushes—the coming winter will be harsh and frosty.
- If there is no dew on the grass in the morning—expect quick and prolonged rains.
- This day was considered very auspicious for gathering the first medicinal herbs and beginning haymaking.
