A Russian paratrooper has been charged with a new count of torturing a civilian in Bucha
Chingiz Atantayev, a platoon commander in the Pskov Division of the Russian Airborne Forces, who is already serving an 11-year sentence for war crimes, has been notified of new charges.
This information comes from the Book of Torturers of the Ukrainian People, as well as Armyinform.
The investigation established that in March 2022, during the occupation of Bucha, the suspect, together with an accomplice, stopped an unarmed local resident, forced him to undress, and broke his leg with a blow from the butt of an assault rifle.
The senior sergeant of the Russian Federation’s 234th Regiment was convicted by the Makariv District Court back in November 2025; however, new evidence of cruel treatment of civilians has allowed for additional charges to be brought under Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. As a result of the occupier’s actions, the victim suffered a fracture of the calcaneus and prolonged psychological distress. A pre-trial investigation is currently underway as part of a large-scale proceeding regarding the atrocities committed by the Russian army in the Kyiv region, where over 98% of those killed during the occupation have already been identified.
The European Union insists on the need to hold Russia accountable for the crimes committed in Bucha at the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The foreign ministers of the European Union have expressed their support for the establishment of a special tribunal to investigate Russia’s war crimes in Ukraine.
