Efforts have begun to form a coalition to renew Ukrzaliznytsia’s locomotive fleet
At the “Carpathian Eight” summit in Bukovel, efforts began to form an international coalition to support Ukrzaliznytsia and strengthen its locomotive fleet. The first step will be to secure $100 million in grant funding through the RELINC project in partnership with the IBRD to purchase used locomotives on international markets. This was announced by Mykola Kalashnyk, Minister of Recovery, Infrastructure, and Transport.
The need for restoration arose because, since the start of the full-scale invasion, 533 Ukrzaliznytsia locomotives and 75 locomotives belonging to private companies have been damaged by Russian attacks. As part of its initial support measures, Slovakia has already agreed to transfer three electric locomotives to Ukraine.
The coalition’s second priority is to strengthen the company’s energy resilience. As part of the UZ Energy project, 130 million euros have been tentatively allocated to address these critical needs. The relevant agreements for both areas are scheduled to be signed by the end of September.
