The SAP is investigating a possible data breach following reports of a hacking incident involving email accounts
The Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation following reports that Russian hackers may have compromised the email accounts of Ukrainian law enforcement officials. Specifically, the investigation involves dozens of accounts, some of which may have included those of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office.
SAPO representatives reported this in a comment to hromadske.
Currently, no evidence of data theft has been found at the SAPO, but the investigation is ongoing. The SAPO emphasized that “everything is being thoroughly checked.”
Earlier, Reuters, citing Ctrl-Alt-Intel—a group of British and American cyber threat researchers—reported that hackers linked to Russia had breached over 170 email accounts belonging to employees of several Ukrainian law enforcement agencies.
Among their targets were specialists investigating cases of corruption and collaboration. It is alleged that the hackers breached accounts managed by the SAPO, as well as attacked the Asset Recovery and Management Agency (ARMA) and the Training Center for Prosecutors of Ukraine (TCPU).
The Russians allegedly stole data from at least one high-ranking SAPO official. Yaroslava Maksymenko, the acting head of ARMA, is also named among the victims of the hack. At the TPU, it is claimed that hackers breached the email accounts of 44 employees, including that of the center’s deputy director, Oleg Duka.
The officials mentioned did not respond to a request for comment from Reuters. We reached out to ARMA for comment and are awaiting a response.
The Office of the Prosecutor General has disclosed details regarding the formation of a commission to select the leadership of the SAPO.
As a reminder, Oleksiy Shevchuk, spokesperson for the National Bar Association of Ukraine, stated that he and his family had received direct threats to their lives and health related to his appointment as a member of the commission for selecting prosecutors for the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO).
