A scammer swindled $3,000 from a retiree by claiming his daughter had been in a car accident

In Rivne, law enforcement officers apprehended a 22-year-old local resident suspected of defrauding an elderly man. The pensioner gave the perpetrators $3,000 after believing a fabricated story about a car accident involving his daughter.

This was reported by the Rivne Regional Police.

According to the investigation, a 76-year-old Rivne resident received a call from an unknown person who identified himself as a law enforcement officer and claimed that his daughter had allegedly been in a car accident and needed urgent funds for treatment. The man said he only had $3,000, to which the caller assured him that this would be enough.

Later, a woman called the victim from a different number, posing as his daughter and confirming the fabricated story. A few hours later, an unknown man arrived at the pensioner’s home, and the man handed him the money.

The next day, the man visited his daughter and realized he had fallen victim to scammers. He then contacted the police.

During the investigation, law enforcement identified the suspected perpetrator of the scheme. He turned out to be a 22-year-old resident of Rivne. He was detained near a currency exchange office.

During a search, 13,000 hryvnias were seized from the suspect. According to the investigation, he had already managed to exchange the rest of the funds and transfer them to a crypto wallet.

The man was notified of his status as a suspect under the fraud statute. The court imposed house arrest as a pretrial measure. Law enforcement is currently identifying other individuals who may be involved in the criminal scheme.
