Sweden supports the opening of all negotiation chapters on Ukraine's accession to the EU by the end of June
Stockholm has officially expressed its willingness to facilitate the launch of the first round of integration talks as early as May, with the remaining five rounds to follow next month.
This was announced by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga following a meeting with his Swedish counterpart, Maria Malm-Stenergård.
In addition to European integration progress, the ministers discussed tightening sanctions against Russia’s “shadow fleet” and expanding defense cooperation. The parties focused on potential deliveries of Gripen fighter jets, as well as coordinating efforts under the PURL defense program, through which European allies jointly finance and procure American weapons for the needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
There is currently no consensus within the European Union regarding the number of accession negotiation chapters that Ukraine will be able to open at the summit in June. France and Poland are the main opponents of rapid progress, proposing to limit negotiations to just the “Foundations” cluster instead of all six, as Kyiv seeks.
The EU must open the first negotiation cluster with Ukraine as soon as possible — Koshta.
Hungary’s future Prime Minister Péter Magyar held talks with representatives of the European Union. The parties discussed the prospects for opening negotiation clusters as part of Ukraine’s EU accession process.
