Sikorski had a disagreement with Navrotsky’s spokesperson over the ambassador to Ukraine
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski publicly clashed with presidential spokesperson Rafał Leszkiewicz over the nomination of Piotr Łukasiewicz as Poland’s ambassador to Ukraine. Leszkiewicz stated that President Karol Nawrocki might not approve his appointment.
As noted, Lukasevich has headed the Polish Embassy in Ukraine as chargé d’affaires ad interim since September 2024.
Leszkiewicz stated on the radio that Nawrocki is prepared to discuss the ambassador’s appointment with the foreign minister, but Lukasevich’s nomination may not receive the president’s approval.
“I urge you to carefully review Mr. Lukasevich’s biography and his past activities. In addition, I urge you to listen to Mr. Lukasiewicz’s speech during the commemoration of the anniversary of the Volhynia tragedy,” said Navrotsky’s spokesperson.
Sikorski reacted sharply to these remarks, stating that the president cannot, at his own discretion, reject candidates who have passed the relevant procedure in the Sejm.
“No, Mr. Leshkevich. Just as the president has no right to refuse to swear in judges elected by the Sejm, so too does he have no right to be selective about candidates approved by the Sejm’s Foreign Affairs Committee,” the foreign minister stated.
“You are neither the personnel department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor the court of the ‘Sun King,’” Sikorski added, comparing the approach of the president’s inner circle to the court of French King Louis XIV.
The reason for the criticism of Lukasevich by Navrotsky’s inner circle, in particular, was his speech during the July commemoration of the victims of the Volhynia tragedy in Olyka. At that time, the diplomat noted that Ukrainians were also among the victims of violence perpetrated by the Polish side.
