On September 15, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, following the New Julian calendar, commemorates Saint Nikita of Gothia, the Great Martyr. He lived in the 4th century, was a soldier, and spread Christianity among his people.
Saint Nikita suffered a martyr’s death for refusing to renounce Christ. This day is dedicated to courage, faithfulness to one’s faith, and the intercession of warriors.

Memorial Day of Saint Nikita the Great Martyr of the Goths
Saint Nikita was born in the 4th century among the Goths—a Germanic people who at that time lived in what is now Romania and Bulgaria. He served as a warrior and was baptized under the influence of Bishop Theophilus of the Goths, after which he began actively spreading the Gospel among his fellow tribesmen.
When the pagan Gothic chieftain Afanarih began to brutally persecute Christians, Nikita not only refused to renounce his faith but also supported his fellow believers during the persecutions. For this, he was captured, subjected to prolonged torture, and ultimately burned alive—according to tradition, the fire did not harm his body, but the martyr died of suffocation. Nikita’s incorruptible relics, taken by his friend Maruf, were later transported to Constantinople and became the source of numerous healings.
The Church venerates the Great Martyr Nikita as the patron saint of soldiers and defenders. All who need protection from enemies and injustice turn to him.

People turn to the Great Martyr Nikita with prayers for protection from enemies, both visible and invisible, for the intercession of warriors, and for the strengthening of the spirit.
Taking up the Cross of Christ as a weapon, you zealously entered the fray against your enemies; and having suffered for Christ, you surrendered your holy soul to the Lord in the midst of the fire; and thus you were deemed worthy to receive from Him the gifts of healing; Great Martyr Nikita, pray to Christ our God that our souls may be saved.
Folk Beliefs and Superstitions
In the folk calendar, this day was associated with observing nature before the onset of autumn cold and with the completion of agricultural work.
- Warm and clear weather on this day means winter will be snowy and frosty.
- A rainy day foretells a long autumn and a late spring.
- If wild geese fly high, expect a major flood.
- If the leaves turn yellow en masse, fall will be early and cold.
- If spiderwebs are floating low—it will get colder soon.
What Not to Do
According to folk beliefs, it is not recommended to cut down trees or trim branches on September 15. You shouldn’t lend money or belongings to neighbors—it was believed that doing so could “transfer” your own well-being to them. It was considered inauspicious to plan a wedding on this date. People avoided arguments and harsh words; instead, they devoted the day to good deeds and helping those in need.
