Family drama of MP Oleh Semynskyi: court recognizes him as child's father

The Obolon District Court of Kyiv has recognized Servant of the People MP Oleh Semynskyi as the biological father of a girl he long denied paternity of. The decision was made following a lawsuit filed by Tetyana Yarzhemska, the child’s mother.

From 2000 to 2012, Semynskyi and Yarzhemska were in a close relationship, confirmed by correspondence spanning different periods. Around December 2012, Semynskyi was reportedly kidnapped by unknown individuals and held captive for three years. After his release, according to Yarzhemska, their contact was restored. In 2021, the woman gave birth to a daughter, but the MP refused to acknowledge paternity.

In January 2022, the mother filed a court case. Semynskyi called the lawsuit an attempt to discredit him, repeatedly failed to attend hearings, and asked for postponements citing poor health. A DNA test was ordered during the case, but Semynskyi did not appear to provide biological samples.

Based on the evidence and expert examination, the Obolon District Court ruled Semynskyi to be the father, concluding the prolonged legal proceedings.

This case highlights the importance of accountability, even among public figures, and may impact the personal reputation of the MP.

Looking ahead, the parties involved may seek to secure further legal rights, while public discourse about politicians’ personal responsibility is likely to continue.
