Cheese prices in Ukraine may rise due to a reduction in imports

Cheese prices in Ukraine may rise due to a reduction in imports

After a long period of stability, changes have begun to take place in the Ukrainian cheese market. Imports are declining, while Ukrainian producers are already raising prices and reducing the number of promotional offers.

Against the backdrop of these trends, the cost of cheese in Ukrainian retail stores may rise significantly in the near future.

Security risks are one reason for the decline in imports. Due to heavy shelling, Polish suppliers are reluctant to ship products to Ukraine without advance payment, while importers are hesitant to take on additional risks. This could lead to a further reduction in shipments.

At the same time, the decline in imports creates additional opportunities for Ukrainian cheese producers, who can partially fill the niche previously occupied by foreign products. However, it will be difficult to completely replace imports due to differences in the assortment of Ukrainian and European cheeses.

Against the backdrop of expected sales growth, some large producers are already raising their prices, while most companies are reducing the number of promotional offers.

However, rising prices could dampen demand. For some consumers, semi-hard cheese risks going from an everyday item to a product purchased less frequently. This may force producers to reconsider their plans to ramp up production in the fall.

Based on the results of the first three quarters, total production of rennet cheeses remained close to last year’s level. At the same time, this stability was mainly driven by an increase in white cheese production, while production of semi-hard cheeses continued to decline.

Production of processed cheeses and cheese products also remains roughly at last year’s level. Output of semi-hard cheese products has increased slightly, but the growth rate remains modest.
