A court fined a former prosecutor 2.5 million hryvnias for bribery

The Desnyansky District Court of Chernihiv found Andriy Karaputa, a former prosecutor with the Koryukivka District Prosecutor’s Office, guilty of corruption for demanding an illegal benefit of 2,500 U.S. dollars.

According to the court’s ruling, the defendant was granted probation and exempted from serving the principal sentence

Case materials indicate that the former law enforcement official fully admitted his guilt as part of a plea agreement and transferred a significant amount of funds to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

While serving as a prosecutor at the Koryukivka District Prosecutor’s Office, Andriy Karaputa oversaw the pretrial investigation in criminal proceeding No. 42024272150000005.

This case examined the legality of the actions taken by the head of the Department of Public Works and Logistics of the Snivsk City Council during the felling of trees in the protective strip along the bypass road near the railroad crossing leading into the city of Snivsk.

Abusing his official position, the prosecutor decided to exploit the situation for his own illegal enrichment.

According to the verdict of the Desnianskyi District Court of Chernihiv, in October 2025, Karaputa began demanding bribes in exchange for not bringing criminal charges and closing the case.

To carry out his criminal plan, he repeatedly arranged face-to-face meetings with a city council official directly in Snivsk. Investigators documented meetings near the hospital, in the courtyard of the prosecutor’s office, in the central square, as well as near a local café and store.

During several meetings in Snovsk, the former prosecutor exerted psychological pressure, stating that “the case is being monitored by the leadership of the regional prosecutor’s office.”

In addition, to make his claims more convincing, he showed draft resolutions to close the case. Initially, the perpetrator demanded $3,000, but then “offered a $500 discount” in exchange for a favorable resolution of the matter.

After the offense was documented, the case was referred to court, where the prosecutor decided to cooperate with the investigation.

On April 17, 2026, a plea agreement was signed between the prosecutor of the General Inspectorate of the Office of the Prosecutor General and the defendant.

Under the agreement, Karaputa pledged to unconditionally admit his guilt and transfer 2.5 million hryvnias as a voluntary contribution to support the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
