The court ruled that the long-standing failure to designate the Krekhayivski Meadows as a protected area was unlawful

The court upheld the claim filed by the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor’s Office and ruled that the inaction of the Chernihiv Regional State Administration regarding the designation of the 200-hectare “Krekhaivski Meadows” area as a nature reserve was unlawful. The issue of preserving this natural area had remained unresolved for over 30 years.

As early as 1994, by a Decree of the President of Ukraine, “Krekhaivski Meadows” was included in the List of Valuable Natural Areas and Sites Reserved for Conservation. Despite this, the Chernihiv Regional State Administration failed to address the issue of establishing a nature reserve here for over 30 years.

“Krekhaivski Meadows” is a unique stretch of floodplain meadows along the Desna River with typical meadow vegetation, serving as a habitat for numerous animal and plant species, including rare orchids that are threatened with extinction.

The prolonged inaction of the authorities created risks of losing this valuable natural complex, its biodiversity, and gene pool, and also limited the possibilities for recreational use of the territory.

Once the decision takes legal effect, it will serve as the basis for establishing a nature reserve in this area.

This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.

As a reminder, the court extended Trukhanov’s duties until August 1
