May in Kyiv was warmer than usual and set new temperature records

May 2026 in Kyiv was warmer than usual and was accompanied by a series of meteorological anomalies. The city recorded new all-time high temperatures, as well as periods of extreme heat throughout the month.

This was reported by the press service of the Boris Sreznevsky Central Geophysical Observatory (CGO) on Facebook.


 

According to data from the Kyiv Combined Hydrometeorological Station, the average monthly air temperature in May 2026 was 16.3°C.

“This is 0.5°C above the climatic norm,” noted CGO specialists.

Which day in May was the coldest and vice versa
The coldest day in Kyiv last month was May 1.

On that day, the minimum temperature—in the early morning—dropped to 4.2°C.

May 6, on the other hand, was named the warmest day.

On that day, the maximum air temperature rose to 29.9°C (setting a temperature record).

Experts reported that three temperature records were set in the capital during the last month of spring:

  • the maximum air temperature on the afternoon of May 6 reached 29.9°C (which is 0.2°C higher than in 1954 for this date);
  • the minimum air temperature on May 7 did not drop below 17.5°C (which exceeded the previous record from 1968 for this date by 1.0°C);
  • the average daily air temperature on May 7 was the highest on record and stood at 22.7°C (exceeding the previous record from 1907 by 0.9°C and the climate norm by 8.7°C), corresponding to late July weather.

According to the Central Hydrometeorological Service, 56 mm of precipitation fell on Nauky Avenue during May 2026.

It is noted that this amounts to 86% of the monthly average.

Earlier, the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center released a forecast for the second month of spring, according to which temperatures and precipitation will remain within the climatic norm.

After a cold winter, Ukrainians are looking forward to spring warmth, but April will bring not only sunshine but also weather “swings.” 

On Tuesday, March 31, wet and unstable weather is expected in Ukraine—rain will fall across virtually the entire country. These weather conditions are caused by the influence of a cyclone.
