Plum prices have plummeted: how much does a kilogram cost in Ukraine?
Prices for plums in Ukraine have fallen by an average of 24% over the past week. Currently, local producers are selling the fruit in wholesale lots for 15–35 UAH per kilogram.
One reason for this price drop is the sharp increase in the supply of plums on the market. At the same time, demand from local wholesale buyers remains relatively low, which is putting additional downward pressure on prices.
High temperatures also affected the ripening rate of plums. Due to the heat, the fruit ripened faster, and in some cases, its quality deteriorated, which was another factor contributing to the price drop.
Growers do not rule out further price drops for plums, as supply continues to grow while demand remains limited. Currently, the price of Ukrainian plums is, on average, 24% lower than it was at the end of August last year.
One factor contributing to the price decline was the high air temperature during the ripening period, which accelerated the ripening process. At the same time, the weather negatively affected the quality of the fruit, which is also putting additional downward pressure on prices.
Consequently, the supply of Ukrainian plums on the market at the end of August is only increasing. At the same time, demand for the fruit from buyers remains limited, and producers are forced to lower their prices.
Currently, plums in Ukraine are selling for an average of 24% less than a year ago. Farmers do not rule out the possibility that they will have to continue lowering prices and reducing the cost of their product.
