Doctors diagnosed a 35-year-old woman from Lviv with an extremely rare jaw disorder
At St. Panteleimon Hospital in Lviv, 35-year-old Hanna Zozulia underwent successful surgery for an extremely rare condition—synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint. For maxillofacial surgeon Oleg Kovtunyak, this is the first such case in his 35 years of practice.
For three years, the patient had suffered from constant jaw pain and had a severely misaligned bite. In this condition, cartilaginous nodules form in the synovial membrane, blocking joint movement, causing inflammation, and destroying the cartilage. Typically, this condition affects the knee or hip joints, whereas involvement of the jaw is an exceptional case in medicine.
During the operation, the surgeons completely removed the growths along with the synovial membrane. The procedure was complicated by the fact that the nodules were located near a major artery, which posed a risk of bleeding. Currently, the patient is feeling well; her postoperative wounds have healed, and the pain has completely subsided.
