A 16-year-old boy died in Chernivtsi after being struck by a drunk driver in a Mercedes
A 16-year-old boy died in Chernivtsi after spending nearly two weeks in a coma following a traffic accident on Ruska Street. According to the investigation, the teenager was riding an electric scooter when he was struck by a 20-year-old driver of a Mercedes-Benz who was under the influence of alcohol.
The accident occurred on the evening of August 22 at 175 Ruska Street in Chernivtsi.
According to preliminary investigation findings, the 20-year-old driver of the Mercedes-Benz collided with a Fada electric scooter being ridden by a 16-year-old local resident.
After the accident, the teenager was hospitalized in critical condition and unconscious. Doctors fought to save his life for nearly two weeks, but were unable to save him.
The victim died after a prolonged coma.
Following the death of the 16-year-old victim, law enforcement reclassified the criminal case under Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
This involves a violation of traffic safety rules by a person who drove a vehicle while intoxicated and, as a result, caused the victim’s death.
The 20-year-old suspect faces up to 10 years in prison.
Following the teenager’s death, the prosecutor’s office intends to again petition the court for a pretrial detention order against the Mercedes-Benz driver.
“The prosecutor will again petition the court to keep the suspect in custody without the possibility of bail,” the prosecutor’s office reported.
The pretrial investigation is ongoing.
The Chernivtsi Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported the victim’s death.
As a reminder, a fatal traffic accident occurred in the village of Morochne in the Rivne region. According to police, a 16-year-old driver of a VAZ vehicle was intoxicated when he struck a 26-year-old woman on the side of the road; efforts to save her and her child were unsuccessful.
In the Dniprovskyi District of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, a 48-year-old man under the influence of alcohol struck an 11-year-old girl while driving an ATV. The child died at the scene from her injuries.
