The European Commission has commented on the idea of Ukraine's associate membership in the EU
The European Commission has confirmed receipt of a letter from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding the possible granting of "associated member" status to Ukraine prior to full membership.
This was reported by a European Commission spokesperson in a comment to European Truth.
“We have indeed received a letter from Chancellor Merz. We welcome the fact that this discussion is taking place among member states. And we call for it to continue at the level of the European Council,” he noted.
The European Commission emphasized that EU enlargement is a geostrategic investment in the security, peace, and prosperity of the EU, and that Ukraine’s accession is directly linked to the security of the Union itself.
At the same time, Brussels emphasized that the enlargement process must be based on the merit principle and take into account the interests of all candidate countries that have been working toward membership for a long time.
“Any innovative solutions must also be based on the merit principle,” the European Commission added.
